Getting Started On Your Servant Leadership Journey!
Getting Started On Your Servant Leadership Journey!
Overview
Our team at Sol Duc Leadership is very excited that you are interested in learning more about how servant leadership, may enable you and your team members, to help create a better world, while improving business performance.
Jim Collins – past Chair for the Study of Leadership at West Point, defines leadership as:
“Leadership is the art of getting people to want to do what must be done!”
While the practice of leadership has steadily evolved over many centuries, in 2023, there are essentially two basic models of leadership. The first and most prevalent is the Power Model of Leadership. Types of power leadership models include Legitimate Power; Coercive Power; Expert Power; Informational Power; Power of Reward; Connection Power; and Referent Power. Regardless of the style utilized, the Power Model Leader always has position power and resides at the top of the organization to direct team members.
The second and less prevalent leadership style is the Service Model of Leadership, and those who live in the service model environment are called servant leaders. Servant Leadership is based on the universal importance of service. Serving others is a fundamental, universal human value, and it has been emphasized in the teachings of the world’s great religions, as well as by many respected thinkers and leaders. At Sol Duc Leadership, we believe that Servant Leadership provides significant value to the organizations that adopt it within their cultures, and it creates enduring great organizations that drive better business results. We are passionate about the power of Servant Leadership, and leaders serving their teams, partners, and customers from the bottom of the pyramid.
Is servant leadership the right choice for everyone? Not necessarily, and each leader and team member should intentionally choose whether to pursue a Power Model of Leadership or a Servant-Leader Model of Leadership.*
* The thoughts I have shared in the overview are based on Kent M. Keith’s book, “The Case For Servant Leadership.” Kent is a well-respected leadership thought leader, as well as a recognized expert on the Modern Servant Leader movement that was started by Robert Greenleaf of AT&T. Robert Greenleaf, was also the Founder of the Greenleaf Center for Servant Leadership.
